| Listening to "Mukraker", the new track by the Brooklyn based Conveyor and you should be too. My first reaction to the track was....really? Then I listened again and then again and I'm frankly still listening. On the surface, "Mukraker" seems to be a single chord, drone of a song. But that's the surface and there's way more to hear under the howling voice toning over the music. And just when you start to think 'ok…this is cool', they throw in the chill inducing horns and drive the song to another level. There's a sense of playfulness that could be missed from a cursory listen. It's a long track, at over 4 minutes, but it's at over the 3:00 mark where the song hits my favorite spot. The drone gives way to acoustic guitar and soft vocals to fade out and suddenly the whole thing makes perfect sense: the seemingly sketchy production value, the single chord, the howling voice fighting against the synthetic noise and finally that roll of horns into the perfect acoustic ending. "Mukraker" feels smart, light and lively despite the plod and that's exactly what makes it so addictive. | |||
