| Words are one of man's finest creations. With words we can communicate and express ourselves in an individual and identifiable manner. Words are sometimes misinterpreted, misunderstood, wrongly translated or harsh, but even with all these pitfalls, words make life far more colorful. We define things with words and use them to capture ideas and to bring us together. Languages are formed from words and so are lives. Some words are easily comprehended and others take more thought and education. Words can heal us physically, and emotionally, they can either heal us or harm us. Powerful little things, words. Words facilitate interaction between both man and machine. One such environment where words are crucial is conveyor based production and work settings. Conveyors are very complex mechanisms that require lots of attention. There are many standard and technical terms that make conveyor management and function much more clear. Once we learn what many of these words mean and how they are used we can become ever more graceful in our exploits and dealings. Learning the basic terms is a great building block to really advancing our knowledge. One word you will often hear associated with conveyors is guard. Machinery guards are a key to safety. As there are many types of guards and associated parts such as guard rails, chain guards and nip-point guards it is wise to really get a grasp of all the guard terminology out there. Another common but important word in the industry is belt. This is not a belt you wear with your pants but rather a conveyor part with multiple contexts. Words like belt fastener, belt modulus, belt sag, belt slip, belt speed, belt scraper, belt turnover, belt training idler and belt clamp all may be used in reference to conveyors. You must learn about belts when you deal with any system and it is to your immense benefit to understand how they relate to conveyor systems. Some other standard words that are bandied about in the conveyor world, both in their design and operation, are anchor bolt, angle, track, wheel, roller, pulley, shuttle incline and curve. These may seem pretty basic words that are used all the time everywhere, you must know what they mean in relation to conveyors. Doing so will increase your fundamental knowledge of industry words and terms and will prepare you for higher echelons of learning. As we diligently study the language there will always be highly specialized words and word combinations that are rarely found throughout other aspects of life. A reference to a knurl thumb adjacent nut may baffle us in the beginning of our studies. As we learn things, like this particular nut is a tool on an accumulating conveyor to adjust pressure, the breadth and depth of our lexicon will reach new heights. It is possible one day that we may hear the words air-float chain conveyor. Knowing that this is a chain and roller based system that utilizes inflatable air hoses may give us that edge we need when working with other experts. When walking around a factory, or in a board meeting discussing conveyors, hearing the term clevis pin attachment might confuse the average employee. However internalizing that this is a type of clip used within trolley chain systems that aids in holding light loads can elevate us to an impressive level of intelligence and understanding. Other intense words may include skirt board, rheometer, Eytelwein's equation, carcass, plastisol coating, Dutchman and cleat. Regardless of what words you know or do not know it is vitally important if you are involved with conveyors to continue to research about the communication used in the industry. There are so many terms used in conjunction with conveyors that it is often very hard to stay abreast on everything. Words and terms like rail width, chute, clipper lacing, dynamometer, hysteresis loss and Young's modulus will always be a part of the culture. Despite the fact that you may not be able to learn everything about the language, it is still worthwhile to review and dissect as much as we can. Communication and terminology are interesting subjects that should be embraced by those working in the fields related to the language. Understanding and expression through words is a valuable part of life that is certainly not lost within the conveyor industry.
