Setting Boundaries but Raising the Bar for Conveyor Inventions

People like Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, The Wright Brothers, Henry Ford and Alexander Graham Bell have long been pushing the limits of creative thought and invented output. Having changed the course of history in a positive manner with many of their ideas it is without these type of people that we might live in a more stagnant and uncomfortable world. The invention of the conveyor is often associated with the development of the assembly line but the essence and substance of conveyors actually pre-dates this business function.

The building of machines to move items from one place to another can be seen as far back as the early 19th century. To most industry historians the Swedish organization Scandisk was the first to commercialize mass market and put into working production a conveyor type system. Originally geared mostly towards the mining industry and hauling large massed objects across long distances, the innovations of the conveyor have now expanded into almost every conceivable industry. After looking at some of the industries pushing the boundaries of conveyor modernization and what some of these technologies may be, we will have a better understanding of where the conveyor industry stands today and where it is headed for tomorrow.

If you are trying to find human involvement in conveyor systems nowadays, forget about it. No longer are people employed to maneuver those belts and pulleys to keep the line from jamming. Conveyor systems are now composed of fine tuned and very flexible mechanisms that have been involved even in such highly specialized projects as the Hubbell telescope. Don't think for a moment though that conveyors are only used in such specialized space and exploration activities, they are used widely in various applications throughout all industries.

The conveyor is finding new homes in such industries as pulp and paper mills, auto manufacturing plants, steel fabrication centers, logging camps, airplane and helicopter production facilities, toy making, loading and unloading cargo at the docks, cell phone assembly plants, warehouse packaging and distribution centers and a host of other commercial and private operations.

As the world is constantly met with new production dilemmas, it never hesitates to call on conveyors to come to the rescue to help solve the latest object moving necessity. It is always interesting to take a look at some of the more recent conveyor gadgets and concoctions that have recently surfaced throughout the previously mentioned industries.

Design improvements have led to most conveyor systems being run by electronics and computers, which adds greatly to their power and flexibility. With technology has come such innovations as the pneumatic conveying system and the travelator, which is a people mover operated by computers. It's a sure bet that inventive types are working around the clock to develop and improve the conveyor's operations in areas like pressure, conveying line speed, efficiency and performance quality. In the not too far distant future, it is most likely that the jobs of valet and parking lot attendants will fall by the wayside as conveyors are used to place cars in their spots. The very advanced technologies of artificial intelligence and robotics have brought further advancements to conveying solutions. One can see the excitement that future technological enhancements will bring to industry

One of the most cost-effective, time saving and labor reducing devices, conveyors have a long standing tradition of industry aid. Over the years conveyor inventions have facilitated numerous benefits to the products deployed into the world everyday. We must never lose sight of the fact that conveyors are partly responsible for so many of the comforts we relish.
