| A conveyor belt is an important distribution component that comes in various forms and assists the transport of bulky materials by employing pulleys to attain mechanical advantage. This pulley system is commonly found in factories, construction sites, grocery stores, and other places where large objects need to be mobilized. A belt conveyor is the most popular powered conveyor because of its versatility in usage and affordability in costs. With an efficient design, this component reduces the amount of labor exerted in conveying a wide range of materials. There are generally three major components that make up a conveyor belt which are skims, a carcass and covers. The carcass is the most bulky part of the set up being the belt that is used to hold and move the items being transporting. The skims are the system that drives the belt and add reinforcement against the impacts that the load can cause. The covers are there to protect the mechanical inner workings of the belt systems and make them last longer. The carcass is the main support for the loads you will be transporting with the conveyor belt. It has to possess a sufficient amount of tensile strength to be rotated around the loaded belt. It must also the bulk needed to protect those same components from the weight of the load. Since the purpose of the carcass is to provide the primary support, this component is rated according to the maximum recommended operating tension measured in pounds per inch (ppi). Once the carcass is included in the construction of the belt, the system is again rated and this time with consideration of the maximum allowable tension per inch of width (PIW). A typical value of PIW is 440, which can imply that four layers of fabric with a rating of 110 ppi each are piled together. The skims and covers help to support the belt and add strength and resistance against the weight of the loads. Skims can be made of rubber, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or urethane depending on the tensile strength requirement. The cover protects the belt from the load by covering it. The type of material chosen for the cover depends on the load belt conveyor will bare and takes texture, fire resistance, cut resistance and hardness along with others. The surface must also be easy to clean. Common materials include various rubbers both synthetic and natural as well as PVC and a number of urethane compounds. In choosing the right conveyor belt, these components must be checked properly so as to pick the most suitable distribution system that would handle transport operations.
