US Airways Workplace Accident on Conveyor Belt Kills Employee ...

A US Airways employee has been killed in a freak Phoenix workplace accident earlier today as he became lodged between two luggage conveyor belts.

The 60-year-old US Airways maintenance employee, Robert Demarco, was on the job in the checked baggage inspection area, at Terminal 4 of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, when he apparently got lodged in between the upper and lower conveyor belts in baggage sorting system at around noon earlier today. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by Phoenix Fire Department personnel.

Phoenix Police Department spokeman, Officer James Holmes reported that there is no indication of foul play at this moment, but that they will investigate further into this incident. He stated, "This appears to be a tragic accident and Phoenix Police detectives will be working hard to determine exactly how and why this incident occured." Holmes further reported that the incident occured out of public view and that Demarco's body was transported to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office for further inspection.

After the fatal accident, US Airways officials did not immediately respond to phone calls on Friday afternoon. Later, however, US Airways spokewoman Michelle Moher revealed that Demarco had been a ground service maintenance employee who had been with the company for several years. Moher reported that Demarco had been working on the baggage system when the incident took place. US Airways is said to be providing assistance to the victim's family members, friends and coworkers.

It has been discovered that Demarco leaves behind a wife and four children.

This is not the first time an employee at Sky Harbor Airport has been trapped and injured in a baggage conveyor belt. Back in August, a similar incident occured when a maintenance worker got his leg and hand in a baggage conveyor belt system.

We will check in on this story later to see if there is any cause for the victim's family to launch a wrongful death claim.
